Advent is a term from the Latin word ‘adventus’ which means “arrival”. It is a time of waiting for the arrival of Christmas, the coming of Jesus to earth when he was born as a baby at Bethlehem about two thousand years ago.
Advent is the new year of the Christian Church and the church season that leads to Christmas Day and Advent Sunday is the first day of the liturgical year in the Western Christian churches. It can fall on any date between 27 November and 3 December.
When Christmas Day is a Monday, Advent Sunday will fall on its latest possible date. Note that it is also possible to compute the date of Advent Sunday by adding three days to the date of the last Thursday of November.
The wreath is made of a circle of evergreen branches laid flat to symbolize eternal life is the widely recognized symbol of Advent. Four candles stand in the circle representing the four Sundays of Advent. In the center of the circle is a fifth candle is the Christ Candle, which is lit on Christmas Day.
Candles symbolize the light of God coming into the world through the birth of His son, Jesus. These candles are four in number and the theme names given to it are – the Candle of Hope, the Candle of Peace, the Candle of Love and the Candle of Joy.
In the center of these four candle there is a fifth candle in between representing the birth of Christ. The flame of this candle remind us that He is the light of the world and that if we follow Him, we will never walk in darkness, but will have the true light of life.
During Advent, some people make or buy Advent calendars which always start on 1 December as a way of counting the days to Christmas.
