“Christmas on the Pecos” is an annual event held in Pecos river at Carlsbad in southeastern New Mexico. Debuting in the 1991 this event is currently voted as a top 100 “must-see” event by the American Bus Association for the past 9 years in a row.
The dark river, usually illuminated by only the stars and moon, reflects each December what has become one of New Mexico’s grandest holiday light shows. “Christmas on the Pecos” is basically a 40 to 45 minutes long boat ride each night between 5:15 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. Cozily dressed against the winter chill one can boat glides through a fairyland of twinkling lights created by more than 100 Pecos River homeowners and corporate sponsors.
Tours depart from the Pecos River Village, a quaint, turn-of-the-century park, located at 711 Muscatel, that is transformed into a wonderland of sparkling lights and delights. Tours sell out quickly, especially on Thanksgiving weekend, Fridays and Saturdays in December, and Christmas Day. Tours are not offered on Christmas Eve. Tickets may be purchased from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday at the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce, at the Christmas on the Pecos ticket office on days of departure, or on-line at www.christmasonthepecos.com.
