Círio de Nazaré is one of the great celebrations and the world’s largest Catholic processions that take place in Brazilian city of Belém honoring the Virgin of Nazareth. It is often regarded as the “Christmas of the Amazon”.
It takes place on the second Sunday of the month of October. It is said that, a small statue of the Virgin of Nazareth was found in 1700 where the Basilica is built today.
During this procession, devotees follow the statue of Our Lady of Nazareth along the 3.6 kilometers from Belém Cathedral to the Nazaré Basilica, where it is on display for two weeks. It is said that around two million people take part in this procession humming songs, bells and fireworks. A grand display of unusual faith being followed over years.
All the people attending the procession wish to hold on to the rope which is attached to the berlinda, or stand which carries the image of Our Lady of Nazareth. The heightened emotions during the event.
The procession in Belém attracts pilgrims who carry ex-votos-symbols of parts of the body and other icons which represent divine healings and intercessions.

Hundreds of boats participate in a well-know river procession – Romaria Fluvial on the Saturday before the street procession.
