About Diwali Lakshmi Puja – Deepavali – Festival of Lights

Deepawali or Diwali is certainly the biggest and the brightest of all Hindu festivals and Lakshmi Puja is the most important day of the five day Diwali festival.

It is celebrated on the Amavasya Day i.e., the fifteenth lunar day of Krishna paksha (dark fortnight) in the Hindu calendar month of Ashwin.

It is said that on this day, Lord Rama returned to his kingdom of Ayodhya after fourteen years of exile and defeating Ravana, the demon king. For celebrating the return of their king, the people of Ayodhya, illuminated the kingdom with earthen diyas and by bursting firecrackers.

It is also said that Lord Vishnu, who in his dwarf incarnation vanquished the Bali, and banished him to Patala.

Lord Ganesha, the foremost of all Hindu Gods and Goddess Lakshmi, the Goddess of Wealth and Prosperity are worshiped on this day.

To celebrate this day, people decorate their homes with lights and candles and burst Fireworks. It is also the time to exchange gifts and sweets with friends, relatives and neighbors.

For Jains, Diwali marks the attainment of moksha or nirvana by Mahavira in 527 BCE.

In 2017, Diwali festival will be celebrated on 19th October 2017.

Actually Diwali is a five day festival which starts on Dhanteras, celebrated on thirteenth lunar day of Krishna paksha (dark fortnight) of the Hindu calendar month Ashwin and ends on Bhaibeej, celebrated on second lunar day of Shukla paksha (bright fortnight) of the Hindu calendar month Kartik.

In 2024, Diwali Lakshmi Puja will be celebrated on Thursday, 31st October 2024.
