The feast of St. Francis Xavier is one of the most of ancient tradition culture of Goa. It is held every year on 3rd of December in Goa.
It is the day on which he was buried after nine days of prayer, called the Novena. The Feast of St. Francis Xavier hosts various ceremonies to honor the Saint’s death.
During the Feast of St. Xavier, the Basilica of Bom Jesus is decorated beautifully and entire Goa comes alive with celebrations and merrymaking. The feast usually is celebrated for around 9 days.
Though it is a Christian festival, but all the people living in the state of Goa irrespective of their caste and religious faiths. The whole scenario is transformed overnight during the annual novenas and feast of St. Francis Xavier.
Pilgrims converge on the Born Jesus Basilica from distant places. Thousands flock to Old Goa on the occasion of the Feast on St. Francis Xavier and make a mockery of the transport system that is rendered grossly inadequate to cope with the rush.

About Francis Xavier : St.Francis Xavier also known as “Goencho Saib” – Lord of Goa is the Patron Saint of Goa. St. Francis Xavier was revered saint who was born Francisco de Jasso y Azpilicueta was a pioneering Roman Catholic missionary born in the Kingdom of Navarre (now part of Spain) and co-founder of the Society of Jesus. He came to Goa along with the Portuguese in order to spread Christianity. It is said that when his body was brought to Goa after an year to be buried, it was found that the body was as fresh as ever. This was deemed to be a miracle and his body was preserved in a glass coffin inside a beautiful silver casket. Thousands of devotees come from all over the world during the feast to pay respect to the saint.
In 2018, the Feast of St. Francis Xavier will be held in Goa on 3rd December 2018.
