Gowri Habba – Gowri Ganesh Vrat Rituals :

Gowri Habba or Swarna Gauri Vratam is mainly observed by married and unmarried women. It is believed that unmarried women performing Swarna Gauri Vratam will get good husbands and married women will have a peaceful and happy married life.

On this day married women and young girls get up early and after taking a batch visit a temple to seek blessings of Goddess Parvati.

Idols of Goddess Parvati

Then at home they do the ‘sthapana’ of idol of Goddess Parvati or Gowri. In earlier days people used to make an idol of Gowri with turmeric known as arishinadagauri , howeer these days people get readymade idols of Goddess Gowri which are readily available in market. Before doing the staphna, the idol is decorated neatly with clothes. This decorated idol of Goddess Parvati is then mounted in a plate which is placed on a bed of rice or wheat or other cereals.

The Gauri is decorated with garlands, decorations made of cotton, and ladies have a ‘gauridaara’ (sacred thread with sixteen knots) tied to their right wrists, as blessings of gauri and as part of the vratha. This 16-knotted thread is an indication of the 16 long years of intense austerities performed by Goddess Parvati to obtain Lord Shiva as husband.

Some people place a Shivling and Ganesha idol along with the idol of Parvati.

The main puja ceremony during the Gowri Ganesh festival involves bathing the idol in milk, ghee, curd, honey and water. Some people only perform the simple Aarti and sing bhajans.

The baagina is the most interesting part of the festival. It is a offering contains a packet of turmeric, kumkum, black bangles, black beads (used in the mangalsutra), a comb, a small mirror, baLe bicchoLe, coconut, blouse piece, dhaanya (cereal), rice, toor dal, green dal, wheat or rava and jaggery cut in a cube form. There are five baaginas are prepared as a part of the vrat and it is offered in a traditional mora (winnow painted with turmeric). One of these such baagina is offered to Goddess Gowri and the remaining are given to the married women. Various food items and sweets are also prepared which are first offered to the Goddess and then the family members and friends have it.

Delicious food like Chitranna (colored rice), Payasa (pudding), Kayi Holige (a sweet bread stuffed with coconut mixture), Tovve, Saru /Rasam, Kayi Kadabu, Palya (Vegetable dish), Kosambari (salad) and Ambode or bhajji (deep fried fritters) are prepared on this day and offered to the goddess.

Another important specialty of this festival is that parents or brothers of a married woman send her Gauri habbada – mangaladravya (a form of gift). These days however some families send money as representation of mangaladravya.
