About Gujarati New Year – Bestu Varsh – Nutan Varsh

Varsha Pratipada or Padwa or Nutan Varsha or Bestu Varsha is the Gujarati New Year. It is celebrated the day after the Diwali and is the fourth day of the five days Diwali festival.

The Gujarati New Year is synonymous with sud ekam i.e. first day of Shukla Paksha of the Kartik month, which is the first month of Gujarati lunar calendar which is also known as Hindu Vikram Samvatsar or Vikram Samvat.

Gujarati community all over the world celebrates the New Year to mark the beginning of a new fiscal year and people put their worries behind, forget about their past rivalries and misunderstanding and prepare to welcome a new beginning.

Gujarati New Year Day Celebrations :

Since the New Year is celebrated on the next day of Diwali (the biggest religious event of the region), festivities continue with equal enthusiasm. Gujaratis decorate their houses with ‘rangolis’ and garlands, dress in new clothes and visit temples to offer puja to Gods. In the evening, people light up their houses with oil lamps and colourful lights. People will buy new clothes and show respect to elders. Elaborate New Year feasts are organized in houses and friends and families are invited to join the meal. Wishing health and prosperity to each other is an integral part of Gujarati New Year celebration. Homemade sweets and desserts are prepared and distributed among the neighbors, relatives and friends.

In 2017, Gujarati New year will be celebrated on 20th October 2017 and it will mark the beginning of the Vikram Samvat 2074.

The day is also celebrated as Bali Pratipada and Goverdhan Puja.
