Hungry Ghost Festival 2016 on 17 August

One of the most important Chinese holidays is the Hungry Ghost Festival.

The Ghost Festival, also known as the Hungry Ghost Festival (Chinese 中元节 – zhongyuanjie) is a traditional Chinese festival and holiday celebrated by Chinese in many countries like China, Taiwan, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, etc

Ghost Festival is celebrated on the 15th night of the seventh lunar month (14th in southern China).

Hungry Ghost Festival 2016 Dates :

In 2016, Ghost Month is from 3rd August 2016 to 31st August 2016.

In 2016, Hungry Ghost Festival / Ghost Day falls on 17th August 2016.

As per the Chinese tradition, 15th day of the 7th month in the lunar calendar is called Ghost Day and the 7th month in general is regarded as the Ghost Month, a month in which ghosts and spirits, including those of the deceased ancestors, come out from the lower realm and are believed to visit the living.

During this month. Chinese families offer prayers and offerings to the deceased to either honor them or to ease any suffering they may experience.

Daily rituals during the Hungry Ghost Month include offering rice, meat and fruit to the hungry ghosts.

Candles, joss sticks, incense, and paper money are also burned daily until the end of the month when it is believed that the ghosts return to hell.

Other traditional practices include releasing paper boats or lit lanterns on the water, which is important to providing direction to any ghosts that are lost and cannot find their way.
