Kanakadasa Jayanthi celebrates the birth anniversary of Saint and Poet Kanaka Dasa who is considered to be one of the greatest social reformers of Karnataka.
In order to pay tribute to this great saint, government of Karnataka declares the day as a state holiday.
In 2016 Kanakadasa Jayanti will be celebrated on 17th November 2016.
Kanaka Dasa (1509–1609) was a poet, philosopher, musician and composer from Karnataka. He is known for his Kirtanes and Ugabhoga compositions in the Kannada language for Carnatic music.
Poems of Kanakadasa dealt with every aspect of life and he was against the caste system through his poems.

Kanakadasa Jayanti is celebrated throughout Karnataka with great devotional fervour and gaiety.
On this day, all government offices, schools and colleges pay tribute to this poet and a social reformer.
On this day colourful processions are taken out and various cultural programmes are also organised.
Special celebrations are also held in Shri Krishna Mutt in Udupi, a place which had special significance in life of Kanaksdasa.
