Karthigai Deepam is celebrated on the full moon night of Tamil month of Karthigai which coincides with the star Kritika.

It is a popular belief that Lord Muruga or Kartik took the form of six babies in a lake called Saravana Poigai. On this day, all his six forms were united by his mother Goddess Parvati. Karthigai Deepam is also a mark of the celebration of brother and sister bond in southern India just like Raksha Bhandan or Bhai Dhuj.
