Karva Chauth is a Hindu festival celebrated by married Hindu women on the fourth lunar day of Krishna paksha (dark fortnight) in the Hindu calendar month of Kartik.
On this day women observe a fast from sunrise to moon rise for longevity, well-being and prosperity of their husbands. This is a strict fast in which women abstain from food and water for the whole day.

Karva Chauth fast or Karva Chauth Vrata is mainly observed in Indian states of Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Haryana, Indian Punjab, Rajasthan and Gujarat.
On this day, married women observe a fast, praying for the long life, well being and prosperity of their husband. They break their fast in the evening, after moonrise. On this sacred festival, people come together and socialize with friends and family, exchange gifts and share home cooked meals.
