La Tomatina is the ‘World’s Biggest Food Fight’ held annually in Bunol, Valencia in Spain. It is a Tomato fight in which people throw tomatoes on each other.
La Tomatina – Tomato Fight Festival in held in Bunol on last Wednesday of the month of August every year.
Every year approximately 40,000 tomato enthusiasts make their way from all corners of the world to fight with tomatoes during this festival.
It is believed that the tomato fight has been held in Bunol since 1944 or 1945. Although its history is unclear, local say that the fight began as a spat between local merchants, or a tribute to the practice of disgruntled citizens throwing tomatoes at politicians.
What Happens in La Tomatina ?
During La Tomatina Festival, giant trucks roll into the town and deliver thousands of rotten tomatoes, which revelers grab, smash and throw at one another in an epic battle. Not only people, but nearby buildings and city streets also get covered in juicy red tomato guts.
The week-long festival features music, parades, dancing, and fireworks. On the night before the tomato fight, participants of the festival compete in a paella cooking contest.
