The Ladakh Festival is the annual festival held in Leh (Ladakh) during the first fortnight of September, from the 1st to the 15th. It is the main tourist attraction every year.
The Ladakh Festival showcases the region’s diverse cultural heritage and its traditions in a haze of colours, music and dance. The festival also highlights the sports and culture of the region.
This Annual Ladakh Festival is organised by the Jammu & Kashmir Tourism in collaboration with the local and district communities.
Every year the festival starts with Parades and Long processions of local leaders, schoolchildren and dancers, all wearing traditional Ladakhi dresses and dancing on tunes of traditional music.
What follows is days of lion dances, Yak dances, testing of craft skills, excellent local foods and plenty of country liquor locally known as chang! White-water rafting expeditions and treks are organised during this 15 day festival.
The most famous highlight of the festival is the polo tournament called the Ladakh Festival Cup in which Leh Bazaar, Kargil district, Zanskar valley and many such smaller villages participate.
Another major highlight of this festival is the archery competitions which are held in every village around Leh, and every villager is compulsorily expected to attend this festival to test his bow and arrow skills. Along with this archery competitions, cultural dancing and singing festivals are organised for women in which participation is compulsary.
