Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga Temple located in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh is one of the most famous Hindu temples dedicated to Lord Shiva and is one of the twelve Jyotirlingams, which are supposed to be the most sacred abodes of Shiva.
The temple is situated on the side of the Rudra Sagar lake. The presiding deity, Shiva in the lingam form is believed to be Swayambhu, deriving currents of power (Shakti) from within itself as against the other images and lingams that are ritually established and invested with mantra-shakti.
Maha Shivratri, is a Hindu festival celebrated every year in reverence of Lord Shiva. As per Hindu calendar, Maha Shivratri is celebrated every year on the 13th night/14th day of the Maagha or Phalguna month of the Hindu calendar.
In 2018, Mahashivratri will be celebrated on Tuesday, 13th February 2018.
Darshan of any of these twelve Jyotirlingas (lingams of light) on Maha Shivratri or any other day is considered to be auspicious.
