Mahalaya, signifies the end of Pitri Paksha and the beginning of Devi Paksha. It is believed that on this day Devi Durga begins her journey from Kailash to the earth. This day marks the start of the Durga Puja Festival in West Bengal.
Mahisasuramardini (Bengali: মহিষাসুরমর্দ্দিনী, The Annihilator of the Buffalo Demon) is a widely popular early morning radio programme that has been broadcast since 1932 on the All India Radio (AIR). It is a two-hour audio montage of Chandipath (chanting from Chandi) recitation from the scriptural verses of Sri Sri Chandi or Durga Saptashati.
When we talk about Mahisasuramardini only one name comes to our mind that is of Birendra Krishna Bhadra who sung the historical devotional song Mahisasur Mardini Of Mahalaya which we hear every year on the All India Radio early in the morning on Mahalaya Day at around 4 am.
In 2016, Mahalaya will be celebrated on Friday, 30th September 2016.
