Muharram : Islamic events taking place during Muharram

Muharram is the first month of the Islamic calendar (lunar calendar) and the first day of this month is the Islamic New Year.


It is one of the four sacred months of the year in which fighting is prohibited.

Muharram is so called because it is unlawful to fight during this month, the word is derived from the word .

1st Day : Shi’a Muslims begin the Commemoration of Muharram which marks the anniversary of the Battle of Karbala. Indonesian Muslims celebrate Satu Suro, a day of meditation for some.

2nd Day : Death anniversary of Umar ibn al-Khattab, the second Sunni Caliph of the Rashidun Caliphate. Hussein ibn Ali enters Karbala and establishes camp. Yazid’s forces are present.

7th Day : Access to water was banned to Husayn ibn Ali by Yazid’s orders.

10th Day : On Ashurah Hussein ibn Ali was martyred in the Battle of Karbala. Shia Muslims spend the day in mourning, whilst the Sunni Muslims fast on this day commemorating the rescue of the people of Israel by Musa from Pharaoh

15th Day : Birth of Muhammad Sirajuddin Naqshbandi in 1297 AH.

25th Day : Martyrdom of Zayn al-‘Ābidīn, fourth Shia Imam, day of Shahid in 95 AH.

27th Day : Mesum was killed.

28th Day : Death anniversary Urs of Ashraf Jahangir Semnani in 808 AH a great Sufi saint in India.
