Mysore Dasara is the state festival “Nada Habba” of Karnataka which is a ten day festival which ends on Vijayadashami also known as Dussehra (Dasara). The same festival is also known as Navaratri (Festival of Nine Nights).
The word Dasara is derived from the Sanskrit Dasha-hara which means “remover of bad fate”.
According to the legends, Vijayadashami symbolises the victory of truth over evil, it is the day on which Goddess Shakti (Chamundeshwari) killed the demon Mahishasura.
Mahishasura is the demon from whose name; the name Mysore has been derived. Hence Dasara is celebrated with great enthusiasm in the city and entire Karnataka State.
The city of Mysore has a long tradition of celebrating the Dasara festival. The Dasara festival completed 400th anniversary in year 2010.

This year, Mysore Dasara Festival will be celebrated on 10 and 11 October 2016.

Dasara is celebrated elaborately and with great enthusiasm in Mysore hence it attracts a huge audience both from all over India and all over the world.
Complete Mysore is decorated for this festival of ten days. Especially the Mysore Palace is lit up on all the 10 days of Dasara. The royal family of Mysore performs special Pooja on the occasion and also organizes cultural programs.
A traditional Dasara procession or Jumboo Savari is held on the streets of Mysore city on Vijayadashami with the main attraction is the idol of the Goddess Chamundeshwari which is placed on a golden mantapa on the top of a decorated elephant. The procession starts from the Mysore Palace and culminates at a place called Bannimantap. This idol is worshipped by the royal couple and other invitees before it is taken around in the procession. The procession is fill with colourful tableaux, dance groups, music bands, decorated elephants, horses and camels.
The Dasara exhibition is another important part of the celebration which is held in the exhibition grounds opposite to the Mysore Palace which starts from Dasara and end December. Various stalls which sell items like clothes, plastic items, kitchenware, cosmetics and eatables are set up to attract people. A play area containing attractions like Ferris wheel is also present to provide entertainment to the people.

By Road : Mysore City is located 140 km south-west of Bangalore, in Karnataka state of India. National Highway 212 passes through Mysore. Nearby cities include – Somnathpur (35 km), Nagarhole (96 km), Bandipur (80 km), and Srirangapatna (15 km). By Rail : Mysore Junction Railway Station is the nearest railway station to reach Mysore Palace. By Air : Bangalore Airport (140 km) is the nearest airport.
