Oktoberfest is an annual beer festival held in Munich, Bavaria which runs for 16-18 days from late September to first weekend in October. It is considered to be the world’s largest beer festival. Locally the festival is known as “die Wiesn”
The 2012 Oktoberfest beer festival opened on Saturday, 22nd September 2012 in Germany as Munich’s mayor tapped the first keg to kick off the 16-day Oktoberfest.
With only two blows of his hammer and a cry of “O’zapft is” — “It’s Tapped” — Mayor Christian Ude inserted the tap into the first keg, opening the 179th Oktoberfest to the cheering of thousands who were waiting to be served their first beer.
In 2012 Oktoberfest beer festival will be celebrated from 22nd September to 7th October 2012.
More than 6 million guests from around the world attend this festival every year to descend on the beer tents of Munich to celebrate the 16-day Oktoberfest extravaganza.
Oktoberfest is known worldwide for its towering mugs of beer, oompah music, men wearing traditional Bavarian Lederhosen leather shorts and women in bright costumes.

The Munich Oktoberfest began in 1810, as a wedding party thrown by King Joseph Maximilian of Bavaria to celebrate his marriage to Princess Theresa of Saxony.
