The Annual Pandharpur Yatra, also known as Pandhapur Palki Yatra or Pandharpur Ashadi Ekadasi Waari Yatra is the most famous pilgrimage to Lord Vithoba Temple at Pandharpur in Maharashtra.
Pandharpur Yatra is an unparalleled pilgrimage that breaks the barriers of caste, creed, rich and poor. People of all age groups from young to old, participate in this pilgrimage. warkaris or pilgrims travel for kilometers barefooted chanting the holy names.
The Yatra begins 21 days before the Ashadi Ekadasi and culminates on the day of Ashadi Ekadashi. 21 days before the Ashadi Ekadasi, the palkhi of Sant Dnyaneshwar starts from Alandi and the palkhi of Sant Tukram starts from Dehu. On the Ashadi Ekadasi both the Palkhi’s reach the holy town of Pandharpur and the yatra culnimates.
Sant Tukaram’s Palkhi Route : The Procession starts from Dehu & reaches Pandharpur via Aakurdi, Pune. Lonikalbhor, Yavat, Varvand, Baramati, Indapur, Akluj & Wakhri respectively.
Sant Dnyaneshwar’s Palkhi Route : The procession starts from Alandi & reaches Pandharpur via Pune, Saswad, Jejuri, Lonand, Faltan, Natepute, Malshiras, Velapur, Shegaon & Wakhri to Pandharpur.
If we look into the history books then we will come to know that the Pandharpur Yatra has been taking place for more than 700 years. It is believed that the first pilgrimage was done by the parents of Saint Dnyaneshwar in the 13th century. However the procession in its current form was started by Sant Tukaram’s son Narayanmaharaj in 1685.
In 2018, Ashadi Ekadashi will be celebrated on 23rd July 2018.
Pandharpur Ashadi Ekadasi Waari Yatra 2018 Dates :
In 2018 Pandharpur Ashadi Ekadasi Waari Yatra starts on 5th July 2018 and the Yatra culminates on Ashadi Ekadashi day on 23rd July 2018.
The Palki of Tukaram Maharaj from Dehu, Pune will start on 5th July 2018 and Sant Dnyaneshwar Palkhi from Alandi begins on 6th July 2018.
The devotees or pilgrims are called as ‘Warkaris’ and they march in groups, each group of Warkaris is called as ‘Dindi’. The Journey from Dehu and Alandi to Pandharpur is called as ‘Wari’. The Warkaris walk nearly 450 kilometres during their journey to reach Pandharpur and offer their prayers to lord Vitthal (A reincarnation of Lord Vishnu).
