In 2016, Ganesha Chaturthi will be celebrated on 5th September 2016.
It is the time when we welcome Lord Ganesha to our home and offer him lots of sweets.
It is a well known fact that Lord Ganesh likes sweets very much, hence any festival dedicated to Lord Ganesha will always be incomplete without offering him special sweet dishes.
On occasion of Ganesh Chaturthi, birthday of Lord Ganesha people make many sweets to offer to Lord Ganesha.
Apart from making modaks, Maharashtrian people also make Puran Poli.
Puran Poli Recipe for Ganesh Chaturthi :
Puran Poli Recipe
For Dough :
1 cup of Maida or Wheat Flour
1 pinch of Turmeric Powder
1 pinch of Salt
2 tsp of Ghee
Water or milk for dough
6 tbsp of Oil
Oil / Ghee, for frying or Roasting/baking
For Inner Filling :
1 – 1/2 cup Jaggery or Sugar.
1 – 1/4 cup Bengal Gram or Chana Dal
1/4 tsp Cardamom Powder (Elaichi)
1 pinch of grated Nutmeg (Jeiphal)
Blend the ghee with the maida or wheat and make a soft smooth dough of it with water or milk. Wrap a wet cloth around the dough for 40-50 minutes, then knead it again. Put in the 6 tbs oil and knead till completely absorbed, then cover and leave it aside for 4 hours.
Put the dal with just enough water in the cooker till one whistle. Drain the extra water if any. Grind or blend dal, jaggery, cardamom powder and Nutmeg to make a paste but it should not be watery.
Then divide the filling and dough in small balls. Then flatten a dough ball, place one ball of filling on it and complete cover up the filling. Then carefully roll out the dough into thick round puri. Then take a tawa fry it on a tawa with pouring ghee around it. Cook on both sides.
