Purnima (Sanskrit: पूर्णिमा) (also called Poornima, Pournima) and also known as Full Moon Day is the day (tithi) which marks the division in each month between the two lunar fortnights (Paksha) namely the Shukla (“bright”) Paksha and the Krishna (“dark”) Paksha.
Purnima day is known for its spiritual importance and significance, and there are many hindu festivals observed on these days.
Some of these important festivals which fall on Poornima day are –
Vat Pournima (Jyeshta Poornima), Guru Poornima (Ashadh Poornima), Sharad Purnima or Kojaagari Purnima (Ashwin Poornima), Buddha Poornima (Vaisakha Poornima), Holi (Phalgun Poornima), Dattatreya Jayanthi (Margashira Poornima) Raksha Bandhan or Narali Purnima (Shravan Poornima) and Deva-Diwali (Kartik Poornima)
There are many Hindus who observe a fast on this day.
