Puthandu Kolam Designs Patterns / Decorations

Puthandu (Tamil: புத்தாண்டு) also known as Varusha Pirappu is Tamil New Year observed on the first day of Tamil month Chithirai (falls on 13th or 14th April according to the Gregorian Calendar).

On this day, Tamilians decorate the entrance of their houses by making kolams or rangolis.

At the center of this kolam, a lamp called kuthuvillakku is placed with a belief that that it would dispel darkness. People also visit to temples on this day to seek divine blessings for the coming year.

In 2016, Puthandu will be celebrated on 14th April 2016.
