Quema del Diablo or the Burning of the Devil is a ritual based festival which takes place in Guatemala every year on 7th December.

Just before Christmas the Guatemalans perform a ritual of cleansing with a day devoted to Burning the Devil!

On this day Guatemalans cleam their homes and what ever rubbish is collected is burnt on streets collectively in form of a huge bonfire with an effigy of the devil on top.

At 6pm the fires are lit, casting out the Devil and his evil spirits in time for the Holy Season.

Most Guatemalans gather and burn newspapers used all year, the bonfire is so huge that smell of smoke exists even in the morning of the next day. Hence it is advisable for all local peole who have respiratory problem to leave the city at this time.

Firecrackers are also burnt on this day.

The idea is to burn all of the bad from the previous year and to start anew from the ashes. As they say Burn the Devil, Make Way for Mary.
