New Year’s Eve is a spectacular celebration in Iceland, especially in he capital city of Reykjavik.
The northernmost capital of the world, Reykjavik, celebrates New Year’s Eve with tradition and loving dedication.
The celebrations here start in the evening with the mass at Reykjavik’s Cathedral which almost every Icelander listens to on the radio. This is followed by dinner.
Áramótaskaupið (English: The New Year’s comedy), is an annual Icelandic television comedy special, and is an important part of Icelandic New Year’s celebration for most.
At midnight, you get to see a brilliant sky-filled fireworks displays like no other city in the world.
Iceland does not have restrictions on fireworks that many other countries do, so the entire population of Reykjavik, approximately 200,000 people, creates their own fireworks show.
Trying to count the simultaneous explosions at midnight is like trying to count the stars.
Bonfires are also very common, often accompanied by shows, musical events and food tables.
